Is it going to get easier or harder for SMEs to access finance during 2011 – quick answer?

It will be easier for ‘good’ businesses and just as difficult for under-performing or loss-making companies to access finance during 2011. Banks aren’t going to make bad lends just to satisfy government-driven lending targets.

Just how large an issue is access to finance? How is it hitting SME growth plans?

The lack of funding in the markets could be huge. Many traditional lenders are negotiating facilities down, just when SMEs are going to need headroom for growth.

How important are these alternative streams, how common are they, and are they set to grow?

As overdraft lending is squeezed, SMEs are increasingly turning to factoring and invoice discounting providers. Invoice-backed lending continues to grow, and it may become the only viable funding option for many traditional SMEs.
